How to Remove This Super Unhealthy Food From Your Diet

Most of us are aware of the dangers of trans fats, sugars, and generally over processed junk food. But what if one of the most unhealthy foods was still turning up in 25 to 45 percent of our diet without us even realizing that it was bad? That’s exactly what Dr. Catherine Shanahan, author of the new book “Deep Nutrition,” says is happening right under our noses. She says that vegetable oil, a food that most people still consume in large quantities, is having a negative impact on our overall health.

Dr. Shanahan felt compelled to write this book because she noticed that her healthiest patients had a few things in common and not consuming vegetable oil was one of them. But there’s much more to this story that just the vegetable oil that we keep in our pantry. In fact, these body stressors are in just about all processed, frozen, and restaurant food. Like high fructose corn syrup, they’re cheap and easy to use and they’re also dangerous to your health.

What’s So Bad About Vegetable Oil?

According to Dr. Shanahan, vegetable oils—which consist of soy, sunflower, canola, cottonseed, corn, and refined palm oil—can play such a negative role in the body that they cause all sorts of symptoms, from acne to stomach issues, dementia to high cholesterol. This is because they cause oxidative stress in the body. She even contends that in some cases, they seem to negatively impact the body on a cellular level even worse than cigarettes.

“It’s not the oil itself that’s the problem, it’s that when you refine the oil it creates molecules that weren’t there initially and some of the molecules formed can cause oxidative stress,” says Dr. Shanahan. “During processing other carcinogens like solvents and deodorants are also added to the final product.”

Why are Americans Eating So Much Vegetable Oil?

For starters, it’s in everything. We used to eat saturated fats, found in butter, cream, and other unprocessed animal products. But now we eat artificial fats, which according to Dr. Shanahan has a lot to do with the fact that heart disease sky rocketed in the 1950s. While she asserts that this was actually a result of high smoking rates, the cigarette lobby wanted the blame to fall somewhere else. And it just so happened to land an saturated fats. Even though saturated fats are much less processed than what we ended up consuming. Cream and butter, for example, are never refined. They’re also less processed and it’s easy to find local, organic varieties.

Once saturated fats were removed, artificial fats and sugars were added to keep the flavor intact. Now, these artificial fats are added to just about everything including most processed and frozen foods. When you eat out, you’re also likely to be eating vegetable oils because they’re much cheaper to cook with than more natural fat sources.

What Should We Be Eating Instead?

Butter, cream, and cocoa butter do not contain these artificial fats. High quality olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil are also good options. These oils are also more stable when you cook with them. Dr. Shanahan also recommends learning to cook as much from scratch as you possibly have time for instead of eating out or choosing frozen meals. Read the labels on the processed foods that you buy and always avoid soy, sunflower, canola, cottonseed, corn, and refined palm oil.

What Do Dr. Shanahan’s Healthiest Patients Have in Common?

One of the reasons Dr. Shanahan wrote the book is because she wanted to pay homage to her healthiest patients. In her practice on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, she noticed four main tenets of excellent health. Starting of course, with cooking traditional food.

Many of her patients also grew much of their own food in an organic garden and lived much more sufficiently than the average American.

Additionally, they enjoy the freshest foods possible along with meat on the bone, organ meats, and fermented foods. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, she recommends the least processed fermented tofu that you can find. It’s all about eating as unprocessed as you possibly can and choosing the most high quality foods that you can afford.

Stop Buying These Foods

I was surprised to find out that many brands of peanut butter, and many nut butters for that matter, contain these oils. This is upsetting considering that I regularly feed my young son peanut butter sandwiches. The only one that I could find at Whole Foods that doesn’t contain palm oil was the peanut butter that was made with the  in-store grinder using fresh peanuts. Other foods to watch out for include:

  • Nutella
  • Salad dressings
  • Sauces
  • Frozen meals
  • Processed cheeses
  • Cookies
  • Crackers
  • Store made dough

If you want to avoid them, your best option is to ride the outside of the grocery store. The middle section of the grocery store contains pricey junk food that, although it may seem appealing (especially if you go to the store hungry!), usually contains these artificial oils because they’re more shelf stable. I guess this is one more example of the fact that there’s no short cuts in life. Cook from scratch using high quality oils and you end up healthier.

Heart-Healthy Diet Plan: Best Foods Choices To Boost Your …

A healthy diet can keep your waistline slim and boost your overall health, including your heart. Eating certain foods every day can reduce the risk of the number one killer in the U.S. — heart disease. In the infographic, “To Your Health: Eating Smart For Your Heart!” Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans explains what foods to choose and which ones to limit, to protect your heart health.

Sugary drinks, like soda, should be limited or avoided, since they’re linked to a higher risk of heart disease. Previous research found a single sugary drink every day led to a 20 percent higher heart disease risk, compared to men who do not consume any kind of sugary drinks. The study, consisting of over 42,800 men aged 40 to 75 year old, showed the increased risk was still present, even after other risk factors such as alcohol use, physical inactivity, smoking, and a family history of heart disease were taken into account.

Fruits and vegetables are essential foods to boost heart health, but there are some that should be limited more than others. Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as kale or apples are considered heart healthy; eating vegetables with cream sauce, or frozen fruit with sugar added can be detrimental. Choosing to reduce sodium intake can also aid heart health, especially by using herbs and spices; eating reduced salt-salt snacks; and choosing reduced-salt condiments. Condiments like table salt, and canned soups should be limited.

Salmon is considered an ideal food choice, because it contains omega-3 fatty acids, and is lean protein. The American Heart Association suggests eating salmon and other omega-3 rich foods twice a week to reap heart health and other benefits. They also note that people who eat fish regularly are less likely to have cardiovascular disease.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Having a hard time keeping your New Year’s resolution to get healthy? Need a boost? A longtime company based right here in Northern Virginia that does business nationwide might be your answer. Diet to Go offers delivery of fresh low-calorie meals. The company, based in Lorton, is run by its founder, CEO Hilton Davis, who answered some questions Patch sent him recently about his business:

Q: How did you get the idea for starting Diet to Go?

A: I had been in the food business for over 10 years as a wholesaler and had done a project in 1985 with a major retailer of fresh, prepared meals produced and supplied by my company and sold through the deli department. That gave me the inspiration to produce healthy meals and offer them to the general public directly. I started working on the business in 1989 and launched on a very small scale in February 1991.

Q: How has the business changed since it’s beginnings?

A: The basic concept has changed very little. We were local in the DC area until 2000 at which time we developed shipping capabilities so that we could ship our product nationwide. We also opened a partner facility on the West Coast in 2000. We have added different types of meal plans (low carb, diabetic, vegetarian) and constantly upgrade the meal plans to improve quality and keep abreast of new information as to what “healthy eating” is.

Q: How many employees are there? What do they do (cooks, drivers, etc.)?

A: About 100 employees. Kitchen personnel, customer service reps, sales reps and management.

Q: How is your company different than other meal delivery companies?

A: We’ve strictly adhered to the health guidelines and evidence-based knowledge. Through operation efficiency we remain the most economical for food of our quality. Our food also tastes better! We’ve never compromised on that, the food has to be good, very good. We’ve worked with many expert chefs and nutritionists, and don’t outsource so we have tight controls on our products, the process and the distribution. Combined with our twice-weekly distribution, our meals are extremely fresh, so it’s like having a personal chef. We really do consider this more like a personal chef service.

Q: How many different items are there to choose from?

A: Over 450 different meals in four basic types of meal plans. Customers are set up on a meal plan and have countless meal options to choose from; variety is key. You really do get to pick what you get and we think that’s important. We know if customers stick with it they’ll lose 1-3 pounds a week and we hear these types of results every day.

Q: If someone is not on a diet/trying to lose weight, do they still order Diet to Go food?

A: Yes. We believe 30 percent of our customers are “convenience seekers.” Our slogan is “Healthy Eating Made Easy” and we provide that in a delicious, affordable way. We offer smaller plans, too, and can customize to meet individual needs. Often after customers lose the weight, they’ll keep ordering from us. For example… lunches and dinners three days a week, or just dinners five days a week for convenience. Maintaining is a big part of weight loss, so we’re here for all of that!

Q: How often do you change the menu? Is there anything on the menu today that was on the menu when you started out?

A: We are “foodies” so we love exploring new menu items and offering them to our customers. We keep up with the latest food trends and try to offer a variety of dishes so customers can decide how adventurous they’d like to be. Of our approximately 450 meals, probably 50 were served in “Year 1.” Popular meals become classics and stay on the menu.

Q: How do you get ideas for new menu items?

A: We have a team that meets weekly to review our current menus, use customer data as to popularity of meals and develop new meals. Our chefs make new ideas for us and serve them at our weekly management meetings and written feedback is provided. Over the years we’ve worked with many professional chefs in our Guest Chef program and with dietitians, nutritionists and medical doctors.

Q: Can you give us an idea of how much you have grown from when you started to now? (number of deliveries each year/customers)

A: Year one sales were about $250,000, year 2-$660,000 and now about $15 million. We currently serve almost 2 million meals per year and have served over an estimated 20 million total.

Model Iskra Lawrence and SELF Pull Meal Plan Challenge After Criticism It ‘Promoted Starvation’

A healthy meal plan collaboration between body-positive model Iskra Lawrence and SELF magazine drew criticism from Lawrence’s fans, who said the low-calorie diet was “triggering” to eating disorder survivors.

SELF and Lawrence put together a New Year’s Challenge with workouts and recipes, including a sample one-week meal plan. But after it debuted online Jan. 1, readers said the meal plan, which adds up to about 1,500 calories a day, “promoted starvation.” Lawrence, who speaks openly about her own recovery from an eating disorder, said she didn’t expect the meal plan to so minimal when she signed on.

“My involvement with the Challenge from the beginning was the fitness aspect — I wanted to share some of my favourite workout moves with you all that aren’t for weight loss, but to feel healthy, strong and to look after our bodies,” she wrote on Instagram. “I knew that there would be recipes involved but did not know that they would be put together in the form of a meal plan or be so restrictive / low cal.”

I know nothing I can say will undo the damage that was triggered, but I’m thankful to have you all to learn from. Your voices have had such a huge impact and that makes me so happy. By Tuesday, SELF had removed the meal plan from the challenge, and posted an apology on their site.

“In partnering with a body positivity advocate who is a role model to many people who have struggled with and are in recovery from disordered eating, we should have been much more sensitive to this issue,” SELF editor-in-chief Carolyn Kylstra writes. “It’s clear that this type of information could be triggering. That wasn’t at all our intention, it’s on us, and we’re sorry.”

Lawrence added that she reached out to Kylstra after hearing the criticism from her fans.

“After seeing many of your comments and DMs, I spoke with SELF’s editor-in-chief, Carolyn Kylstra. We had a meaningful conversation about the Challenge, after which she made the decision to remove the meal plan,” Lawrence says. “I don’t believe in diets, haven’t controlled my food since recovery, and would never mean to advocate for them.”

Lawrence originally shared information about the challenge on her Instagram page the day it debuted.

“Tomorrow is the start of my Jan challenge [email protected],” she writes, along with a photo of herself biting into a large chocolate bar in front of an open refrigerator. “We spent time thinking of a way to create a healthy challenge that you can learn from and it’s about you feeling good about yourself because health is so much more than just a size or weight.”
