The Real-Life Diet of Supercross Star Ken Roczen, Who Knows How to Eat Healthy on the Go

Professional athletes don’t get to the top by accident. It takes superhuman levels of time, dedication, and focus—and that includes paying attention to what they put in their bellies. In this series, GQ takes a look at what athletes in different sports eat on a daily basis to perform at their best. Here’s a look at the daily diet of Ken Roczen.

Motocross and supercross wunderkind Ken Roczen spends nearly all of his time out in the blistering sun, pushing around a 230-pound bike—sometimes crashing said 230-pound bike, as he recently did during a race in Anaheim, dislocating pretty much his entire arm in the process. So you’ll have to excuse him if he wants to chow down on a little pizza and ice cream in his down time. (We’d say he’s earned it.)

Here’s the thing, though. Some of these other athletes claim they haven’t touched a candy bar in the last decade, but not Ken Roczen. “If you want to get my honest opinion, I think that athletes, they won’t tell you everything, you know what I mean? They say something that they do, but in the end it’s not even really like that at all times.” Winning professional motocross races is stressful enough, which is why Ken subscribes firmly to this philosophy: Take care of your body, but don’t deprive it of all the yummy goodness this world has to offer. After all, what’s the point of risking life and limb while becoming a world champion if you can’t celebrate with a little cake afterward?

GQ: You’re in an interesting position, because you’re not just a professional athlete. You’re out there handling what is essentially heavy machinery.
Ken Roczen: That’s right!

So what’s the key to that? How do you ensure that your body can handle operating that machinery every single day?
Well, I pretty much always start out the day with a cup of coffee. But even before that, on an empty stomach, I take my amino acids. I usually have a 30- to 45-minute workout in the morning, and then afterwards we prepare some breakfast. I believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so I usually try to start things off with a bigger breakfast.

A lot of proteins then, I’m assuming?
I need to have a good mix of protein and carbs, because if I only have protein, it just doesn’t hold on very long for me. I need both a good amount of protein and a good amount of carbs to get me through a day. So I’ll have two eggs, over-easy, and I usually put them on a couple little slices of gluten-free toast.

Oh, are you gluten-free?
No, I just really like that bread. It doesn’t necessarily have to be gluten-free. But I’ll put the eggs over it with a little bit of hot sauce on the side. Sometimes I like to prepare a little bit of a baked potato the night before and have that on the side, just for carbs. Oh, and some avocado—some good fats that will get me pretty far throughout the day. Here and there, I’ll also have a smoothie in addition to everything else. You obviously want to try to get all your vitamins in, and I don’t take any artificial vitamins or pills. I try to get all my vitamins strictly from foods. After all that, I pretty much go out to the track for the day.

I think that would be the hardest time for me, because when I get really into physical activity like that, sometimes I just forget that I need to eat and drink something.
I try to take a legit lunch with me. Prepare a sandwich or something. Preferably chicken. I’m not a big turkey guy. And no cheese. I need quite a bit of food throughout the day, especially during our outdoor season. I have these little—they’re kind of like baby food, actually. Those little squeeze things.

My little cousins love those, but I’ve never actually tried one. Are they good?
They’re pretty natural, so I usually take one of those. They’re not actually baby food, but you know what I mean by those? They have ones that are clean and are pretty much just mixed fruit and this and that with no added sugar.

I imagine it has to be pretty difficult to be out on a bike in the heat, covered head to toe in all that gear, every single day. How do you combat that?
I always have salt tablets with me. Our workouts are so intense, and it’s not like we’re in an air-conditioned gym—we’re outside in Florida during the summertime. So I really need to stay on top of that so I don’t cramp. I’m not really a big water person either, so that has made it a lot more difficult for me, but obviously you really can’t get around it. Drinking lots of water with the salt helps me to recover and actually not get as tired. As soon as I get dehydrated, I start getting really drowsy and I have a hard time focusing, so that is definitely one of the biggest things. I try not to overdo it, but I have half a salt tablet here and there just to stay on top of it. And then I like—I don’t know if you’ve heard of Honest Kids? It’s kind of like CapriSun, but it’s a lot healthier and it doesn’t have a whole lot of sugar.

I would have guessed that you’d be looking to take in more sugars, just to keep your energy levels up throughout the day.
You want to get the right sugar, you know what I mean? You cannot drink Mountain Dew or Coke or whatever. Obviously carbs are sugar, so I like to have some protein with that, because otherwise my insulin level raises and I have a huge high, but then it crashes back down.

So after you’re done at the track and with all your workouts for the day, is everything you’re eating after that basically to prepare for the next day’s workout?
I’m never the kind of guy that keeps eating chicken and rice and vegetables, chicken and rice and vegetables, chicken and rice and vegetables… I eat chicken, but I also have pork. I eat fish, I eat steak. Every day is different, so I don’t get used to the same thing. I’ve gone through that whole stage of sticking to the same foods over and over and over, and that didn’t work out for me at all. Now I have the freedom to actually eat what I believe in. And I have to say, I have a weakness for sweets. My diet is probably 80 percent healthy, 20 percent whatever, but I take some sweets here and there. Ice cream once a week or something like that. I love pizza. Especially when I’m not racing, then on Sundays I’m okay with having stuff like that. I don’t feel bad about it. I’m not a person that—I allow myself to have bad things here and there. If anything, it makes me so happy mentally that in the end it motivates me.

Must-have pizza toppings?
You know what? I have been going between meat lovers and Hawaiian. I really like Hawaiian with Canadian bacon and some pineapple on top.

You mentioned ice cream, too. Now, are you doing something healthier like Halo Top ice cream, or are you going all in with a pint of Ben Jerry’s?
No, I’m going all in. Cookie dough or cookies and cream. But luckily, me being European and coming over to America, the portions are pretty big to me. So I usually just take the kids’ size, and that is plenty for me. Like I said, I don’t do that every single day, but I definitely do not feel bad about it at all when I do.

Heart-Healthy Diet Plan: Best Foods Choices To Boost Your Cardiovascular Health

A healthy diet can keep your waistline slim and boost your overall health, including your heart. Eating certain foods every day can reduce the risk of the number one killer in the U.S. — heart disease. In the infographic, “To Your Health: Eating Smart For Your Heart!” Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans explains what foods to choose and which ones to limit, to protect your heart health.

Sugary drinks, like soda, should be limited or avoided, since they’re linked to a higher risk of heart disease. Previous research found a single sugary drink every day led to a 20 percent higher heart disease risk, compared to men who do not consume any kind of sugary drinks. The study, consisting of over 42,800 men aged 40 to 75 year old, showed the increased risk was still present, even after other risk factors such as alcohol use, physical inactivity, smoking, and a family history of heart disease were taken into account.

Fruits and vegetables are essential foods to boost heart health, but there are some that should be limited more than others. Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as kale or apples are considered heart healthy; eating vegetables with cream sauce, or frozen fruit with sugar added can be detrimental. Choosing to reduce sodium intake can also aid heart health, especially by using herbs and spices; eating reduced salt-salt snacks; and choosing reduced-salt condiments. Condiments like table salt, and canned soups should be limited.

Salmon is considered an ideal food choice, because it contains omega-3 fatty acids, and is lean protein. The American Heart Association suggests eating salmon and other omega-3 rich foods twice a week to reap heart health and other benefits. They also note that people who eat fish regularly are less likely to have cardiovascular disease.

Truckers at ‘ground zero’ in US obesity crisis

Siphiwe Baleka knows why drivers sign up for his fitness program. “The vast majority of the drivers that enroll in the program come to me because they’re scared,” says the former trucker turned trainer who has designed a program specifically for drivers. “This fear makes them coachable.”

“Maybe they’ve just been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, diabetes or high blood pressure,” he adds. “Maybe they have a DOT physical coming up and they don’t think they’re going to pass it. Or maybe they’re having events where they’re passing out or they’re falling and they can’t get up. They may be like the woman who came to me who had gone to an amusement park with her granddaughter, and they kicked her off the ride because they couldn’t get the lap belt across her.”

To Baleka, drivers have a unique lifestyle that makes them susceptible to weight gain and poor health. They sit all day, rarely exercise, endure stress and make poor food choices.

“Long-haul truck drivers are ground zero in the adult obesity crisis,” he explains. “It is an occupation with high obesity rates. They have high rates of metabolic syndrome and low life expectancy.”

Baleka has been working with Prime, Inc. drivers since 2012 and says that the average weight loss for the 13-week program is 19.6 lbs., and between 58 and 63% of drivers finish the program. (At any one time, 30 to 60 Prime drivers are enrolled.) He is quick to add that this is not a diet program but combines a change in eating habits with exercise to produce a healthier lifestyle.

What’s different compared to other fitness programs? It’s targeted precisely to truck drivers’ daily lives, says Baleka. The key is to combine a fast, daily exercise regimen with a diet that emphasizes fewer carbohydrates and increased protein.

“A lot of drivers like to eat Subway sandwiches,” says Baleka. “They’re convenient, they’re economical. They’re thinking, ‘This has got to be healthy; this is healthier than a burger and fries.’ I had a client who was averaging six or seven foot-long sandwiches a week. I showed him that every time you eat that sandwich it was 85 to 90 carbs, which is getting stored as fat, because your body doesn’t need all this energy. So, I said, ‘Listen. I didn’t say you can’t eat at Subway. I didn’t say, you can’t eat your favorite sub. What I said was, instead of getting the footlong, get a six-inch with double meat. Same sandwich, same flavor, same taste, same routine, same everything, but we cut the carbs in half.'”

The program hinges on 15 minutes every day of exercise outside the truck to get a driver’s metabolism turned on. “The minimum requirement is four minutes. You can do it right on the side of your truck. You don’t need equipment and you don’t have to change your clothes.”

Drivers keep logs of their food and exercise which is transmitted to Baleka through a phone app. Baleka also addresses drivers’ psychological issues that may be holding them back from the fitness they desire.

“It can be things like associating exercise with being uncomfortable, with being a negative thing,” he explains. “A lot of females are uncomfortable working out outside of their truck, either being seen by the mostly male trucking society or safety issues. But generally speaking, a lot of it is embarrassment.” Baleka tells participants to think of themselves as lighting a light for others, being a role model.

Woody Sprott felt uncomfortable at first. A driver for Prime, the 225-lb., 5-ft., 8-in. tanker trucker had tried several programs before being introduced to Baleka. At first he was self-conscious about exercising outside his truck in front of other drivers but got past it. He also got past the price. The program costs $339 and participants get their money back when they complete the program. “I thought that would be a good momentum builder, because I’d want to get the money back at the very least. And secondarily, like anybody else, when you’re in a program with other people, you want to win.”

He adds: “The exercise part of this, I call it dancing like a crazy person. I would get out at a truck stop and dance like a crazy man with all these truck drivers looking at me. After a while, frankly, I didn’t care, because I started feeling so good as a result of it. I felt sick before and that’s the truth. It had been 20 years since I got my heart rate up to a meaningful level. I’ve done walking and other mild things to help lose weight, but I hadn’t really gotten my heart rate up, which is something that Sip emphasizes. It made me feel great. I felt like the rust had been knocked off of a 20-year-old car, and I was enthused by that.”

He started the program in August, finished in December, lost 20 lbs., and he’s continuing on his own. “It’s a choice, not a wish. I’m not wishing for it to happen; I’m choosing for it to happen, and there’s a big difference.” He notes that a big benefit of the programs is that it inspired him to be in control of his life. “I don’t eat in restaurants except when I choose to do so. I control what I eat; I keep it right here on the truck. I don’t find it to be a problem at all.”

Baleka gets calls from other carriers who would like him to institute his program for their drivers but that’s not his only interest. He wants to go bigger.

“We don’t need carriers and fleets to hire Fitness Trucking to replicate the program. Here is a low-cost solution that every individual can do [to make the trucking industry healthier]. If every individual does that imagine the results. At every truck stop you would see truckers exercising for four minutes to turn on their metabolism. What if it became the industry standard because everybody knew that if you don’t do this, you’re going to die 10 to 15 years sooner.”

But because about a billion other things besides your relationship status and resulting mood could affect fat metabolism, including other hormones, diet, exercise, and your environment, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether finding love, and in turn, happiness, is the real mechanism in weight loss from the so-called sex diet — even in light of this new research, since it involved animals, not humans.

That said, having a little extra hop in your step regardless of how well your love life’s going certainly won’t hurt your weight loss efforts. Whether you’ve just swiped right on a winner or you’re single AF, you can boost your body’s serotonin levels by stepping into the sunlight or another source of bright light, amping up your exercise, or tweaking your diet to contain more tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin that’s found in foods like milk and chickpeas. You’ll win no matter what the scale says.
