Residence halls to require meal plan

All students residing on-campus, excluding Bearkat Village, will be required to purchase a meal plan for the 2015-16 school year, regardless of classification.

In the past, only first year students were required to purchase a meal plan, but according to a mass email sent by Vice President of Finance and Operations, Carlos Hernandez, Ph.D., the requirements expanded for students’ health.

“Recent research has shown that many students develop poor eating habits during the college years due to the fact that they are eating foods with little or no nutritional value, and students who eat healthy perform better academically,” Hernandez said in an email. “Sam Houston State University is continuously searching for avenues to help students be successful, and we believe that a healthy diet can seriously benefit our students.”

Students will have three meal plans to choose from, ranging from $1,770 to $1,890.

According to the email, later this spring all students with a fall 2015 on-campus living arrangement will automatically be enrolled in the all-access plan. Once the plan is added to their account, students can change it to a different one if they wish.
